My name is Colm MacCárthaigh, and this is my blog. Right now I’m back living in Dublin, after spending quite some time in Leiden in the Netherlands. I’m earning a living working for Amazon.com, mostly on Cloudfront. I’m from Ballyfermot in Dublin, Ireland, and before moving to the Netherlands to work for Joost, I was a Senior Network Engineer at HEAnet.

While working there, I became involved in various open-source projects. Building ftp.heanet.ie (one of the busiest webservers in the world) I got involved with Apache httpd, APR and mod_ftp and am now a member of the Apache Software Foundation. I also became a contributor to the Exim, Apache SpamAssassin, NSD and other open-source projects. I’m also the maintainer of the c-hey, multicast netcat and Apticron projects, and have written various other utilities.

About 8 years ago I was elected webmaster, and subsequently system administrator for RedBrick where I’ve made many good friends. 5 years ago, through one of those friends, Margaret McGaley, I ended up being one of the founding members of Irish Citizen’s for Trustworthy Evoting (though Mags is the true founding member, it was her idea!) and I’ve been writing press releases, speaking to the media, at events and hacking voting machines ever since.

The success of ICTE spurred me into volunteering (following a call to arms from Damien Mulley and Simon McGarr) as a founding Director of Digital Rights Ireland. I can’t give it as much time as I’d like, but DRI is doing a great job, and we’re making real progress on key issues.

On my own time, in the last year or so I’ve developed a keen interest in photography; I’m not very good, but I find that taking hundreds of shots eventually gives me a few I can feel o.k. about posting to flickr, and it is good fun. I’m a traditional Irish Musician, mostly playing Guitar, Bouzouki and Mandolin, but I can get a tune out of a few others too. I’ve written a few tunes that others have been known to play, and have even recorded once or twice.
